Making records - my big break - well, not quite - but what a great time!

HOME OF THE BLUES, Memphis, TN| I recorded my first record for "Home of the Blues" label. "Marie" and "If I Loved You". The record turned out fine, but I was told it was "pretty" by Radio Disk Jockeys, they wanted Rock and Roll. So, I had a pretty record that hardly anyone would buy. A man named Rubin Cherry paid for the recording session and pressing the records. He owned a big record store on Beale Street. He thought the record was great, but it just didn't sell. The band that backed me up on the recording was the Willie Mitchell Band, now in the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
